Hello and welcome to an in-house legal market job update.
The big question in the market at the moment is will the great resignation occur in Australia?
I think the short answer to this is: Yes. A recent GWC report showed that 38% of Australian employees are going to look to change jobs within the next 12 months.
Additionally, there’s two years worth of pent up demand from people that have been unable or unwilling to move jobs. Baby boomers are cashed up and are looking to retire. People are now looking for their jobs to align with their lifestyle and also people are looking to head overseas to work once again.
So when will the great resignation occur?
I suspect it will start in March next year and then continue on through 2022. I think people are going to take some leave over the Christmas period, catch their breath, do their cv, work out what type of job they would like, and then come back in the new year refreshed and looking for their new job.
However, also in December, I expect it to be a very buoyant job market as many people and teams look to recruit prior to the end of the year. So they can have the new starters commence in January. That said, I don’t think there will be that many lawyers looking to move. So it’ll be a tight labor market.
