5 Interview Tips

Got an important interview coming up? Here are five practical tips to help you prepare, stay calm, and show up as your best self. Simple, useful advice to help you make a solid impression.

1. Don’t sit at reception

Chairs in reception are designed to look good and be low to the ground to make the space large… not for you to sit in.  Standing keeps you active, open, and ready to connect. Stay on your feet and make a stronger impression.

2. Don’t take notes

Take a pen, paper, your CV, and the job description, but don’t take notes. Only jot down specifics like emails or phone numbers.

Use the interview to build rapport, and if necessary, take notes when you’re out of the interview.

3. Use body language

Use humour. It’s the top trait on matchmaking sites for a reason. Smiling releases endorphins, and mirroring someone’s body language helps build the connection.

4. Prepare your story

Prepare a 3-minute chronological story that explains why you moved between roles and highlights what attracted you to them.

People are hard-wired to remember stories, so keep it positive and engaging.

5. Interview like it’s your dream job

Treat every interview like it’s for your dream job. First impressions matter, and you don’t want to appear ambivalent only to later decide it’s your ideal job.

Give it your best—you can decide after.
