Fun Facts
  • Days used to be only 19 hours long! → About 1.4 billion years ago, a day on Earth was about 18 hours and 41 minutes. Scientists discovered that the moon’s pull has gradually slowed Earth’s spin, stretching our days to the 24 hours we’re now used to (and grateful for).
  • Sharks are older than trees  → Sharks have been around for about 450 million years, but early sharks were likely toothless and not much like the great whites we know today. Over hundreds of millions of years, they evolved in various forms, adapting to survive five mass extinctions.

1. Note taking

Taking good notes is one of the most boring parts of being a professional. It’s also one of the most stressful (and boring).

What if you miss something vital? What if you misrepresent what someone says? What if people question your version of events.

The good news is that these are no longer issues at all. Video software like Zoom and Teams has a transcript function built in (and it keeps getting better). But don’t stop at the transcript. Feed it into a large language model – like ChatGPT, Claude or Google Gemini – and ask it to generate a summary based on what was said. Quiz it on what decisions were made, what action items emerged and any details you might have forgotten.

2. Brainstorming

There was a time when creativity was hard to come by. Not anymore.

Need some good topics for an article? Different ways to structure an email or even a deal? Some alternative approaches to compliance or insights into legal risks you hadn’t thought of?

AI can help.

ChatGPT and other large language models will give you tens, hundreds, thousands of ideas in seconds.

Now, I know, not all of those ideas will be good ones. Many will be downright lousy. But that’s how idea generation works. You’re lucky if one in ten has legs, and you never get to the perfect idea without refining it first.

To get AI for you, ask for an angle (or five), a contrarian view, something outlandish, or ideas that no one has thought about before. Then work with it to refine them and fit what you do.

With a bit of input from your end, you’re likely to explore directions you never would have otherwise.

3. Research

AI has a well-documented history of inventing its own facts. (OpenAI freely admits that ChatGPT lies.) But that doesn’t mean you can’t use it in your research.

I say this for a couple of reasons.  First, a lot of the news-making examples of AI getting lazy people into trouble (like the lawyer who presented its made-up cases in court) involved earlier and less developed iterations of the LLM. The latest versions, like ChatGPT-4o (or the beta of o1) will search the internet and provide citations that you can check out for yourself. So too will Google Gemini.

AI can help you find, confirm or dispute sources you find, and it can tell you if the information you already have is any good, or whether there are gaps in your work. It will also tell you whether you’ve forgotten something or there’s another point of view that you should include (and what it is).

4. Summarising and comparing

Most of what you do will be based on reading. But how often do you read through an entire document only to find it probably wasn’t worth the time.

AI can cut down your wasted time enormously by summarising documents and pinpointing information for you. If you’re looking for a particular piece of information, feed the whole document into AI and ask where it talks about “X” and what it says.

If you’re feeling bold, ask what’s interesting about the document and why.

You can also give it two documents – even contracts – to compare, then get it to highlight the similarities and differences between their arguments and which is better, more convincing or more likely to hold up.

5. Writing

If there’s one thing AI really excels at, it’s churning out words.

When you’re next stuck halfway through a sentence, ask ChatGPT to finish it for you. Better yet, ask it to finish it in three or five different ways. Ask it to write it in different styles, use different words, come to different conclusions, or emphasise different points.

Ask it to write in different styles. Give a style guide and ask it to follow it. Give it your work (upload some emails or articles you’ve written and ask it to copy them).

All of the large language models write much better than they once did. And if you don’t like what they give you, don’t worry. Often, it’s by seeing what we don’t like that we discover what we do. So tell it what’s working and what’s not and get it to churn out yet another draft.

6. Editing your work

The writing and editing processes are inseparable. Good writing is good editing, and the best weapon when it comes to editing is always another set of eyes. Unfortunately, that’s not something all writers have had access to – at least not until now. Because now, we have ChatGPT.

Ask ChatGPT to go over what you write and make sure the terminology is consistent.

Alternatively, ask it to analyse your writing’s strengths and weaknesses, whether you’ve left something out, whether there’s data you should have included, whether there’s a counter-argument you haven’t addressed, or whether you should break your information up with a list or box or some other device.

Get it to read your writing, suggest better or more watertight ways of expressing things or how to better connect with your clients.

And because there’s nothing that makes us writers look more unprofessional than typos, ask it to find and correct them before you press send.

And finally…

Better than using one large language model, why not have two or three on the go?  Play them off against each other. Ask them both to do the same thing, or to refine other’s work.

Ask them both to interpret the meaning of a clause, and then to argue each other’s point of view. Ask them to both write an email and see which one works, or both to read the same document and see who decides what is more important.

In short, it’s by playing around with AI in every stage of what you do, that you’ll see how it can revolutionise the way you work, helping you deliver a better product more quickly.

Ralph has taught thousands of professionals in Australia and overseas how to incorporate AI into their work to become faster and better writers.

Two people sitting at a desk talking.

1. Don’t sit at reception

Chairs in reception are designed to look good and be low to the ground to make the space large… not for you to sit in.  Standing keeps you active, open, and ready to connect. Stay on your feet and make a stronger impression.

2. Don’t take notes

Take a pen, paper, your CV, and the job description, but don’t take notes. Only jot down specifics like emails or phone numbers.

Use the interview to build rapport, and if necessary, take notes when you’re out of the interview.

3. Use body language

Use humour. It’s the top trait on matchmaking sites for a reason. Smiling releases endorphins, and mirroring someone’s body language helps build the connection.

4. Prepare your story

Prepare a 3-minute chronological story that explains why you moved between roles and highlights what attracted you to them.

People are hard-wired to remember stories, so keep it positive and engaging.

5. Interview like it’s your dream job

Treat every interview like it’s for your dream job. First impressions matter, and you don’t want to appear ambivalent only to later decide it’s your ideal job.

Give it your best—you can decide after.

Hello, this is Andrew Murdoch from Dovetail Legal Solutions. With a August 2024 in-house legal job market update. There are three main takeaways.

The first takeaway is that although the job market has been softening over the past 12 months and there are now 15% fewer job ads than what there were 12 months ago. This has to be taken into a broader context, and that it’s coming off a very large high post-COVID, the job ad rate and indeed the unemployment rate are still better than what they were pre-COVID. Additionally, we’ve historically seen the months between September and December as the busiest time of the year for us. We typically almost place twice as many people in that period as what we do during the beginning of the year.

The second takeaway is that there are almost twice the number of in-house lawyers with more than 6 years experience looking to leave their job now than what there were 12 months ago. That rate has risen from around 15% to 30% in the last 12 months. Some of that can be put down to people looking to move jobs for a higher salary, to compensate for increased, living cost expenses.

The third takeaway is that while there’s been an increase in lawyers with more than 6 years experience looking to change jobs, there has been a decrease in active candidates. Active candidates are those candidates that look on job sites like LinkedIn and Seek and are applying for jobs and really actively pushing out there through the market. Passive candidates are ones that would like to change jobs, but are really waiting to be contacted about those roles. They’re the passive candidates. I liken this to, a donut. Would I like a donut? Yes. Am I prepared to leave the office, go down to find a café, buy a donut, and come back to the office and eat it? Perhaps not. But if that doughnut was put to me, on a plate in front of me, would I eat that? Gladly.

If you have any queries or would like to know more about the job market or about resourcing a lawyer for your team, please give us a call at Dovetail Legal Solutions. Thank you.

Three Questions Interim Lawyers Need to Ask https://dovetaillaw.com.au/three-questions-interim-lawyers-need-to-ask/ https://dovetaillaw.com.au/three-questions-interim-lawyers-need-to-ask/#respond Mon, 08 Jul 2024 05:17:48 +0000 https://dovetaillaw.com.au/?p=14568
Overview:

Interim lawyers should ask three key questions before starting an assignment:

  1. Identifying the employer and payment details,
  2. Understanding client payment and expectations, and
  3. Clarifying client payment for services.

It’s important to be covered by professional indemnity insurance and to be aware of restrictions and obligations for permanent employment. Additionally, understanding fees and restrictions for permanent employment can help avoid difficulties at the end of an interim assignment and bridge the expectation gap due to payment differences, impacting performance versus client expectations.

Transcript:

This is Andrew Murdoch from Dovetail Legal Solutions with three questions interim lawyers should ask before they begin an assignment. The first question should be, who is my employer? Who’s going to be paying my salary and my superannuation?

Under the legal uniform laws, this should either be a legal practice or the company to which you are providing advice to. To do otherwise may mean you’re not covered by professional indemnity insurance. The second question you need to ask is, how much is the client paying for my services?

If they’re paying $300k a year and you’re receiving $100k a year, does the client know how much you’re getting paid? And do you know how much the client is paying? The difference between those two numbers could lead to an expectation gap, which could become awkward in terms of your performance versus what the client expects. The third question you should ask is: What are the restrictions and obligations, if any, on a client and you should the client wish to engage you as a permanent employee?

Are there any fees that need to be paid? Are there any restrictions on the client contract or on your contract? To know this will avoid the difficult situation at the end of your interim assignment and you wish to both become a permanent employee, that they can’t do so because of some restrictions that you’re unaware of or the client was unaware of.

To hear Dovetail’s answers to these questions, please continue to watch this video.

And if you’d like to speak further about anything raised, please contact me, Andrew Murdoch, at Dovetail Legal Solutions. Thank you!

Hi. This is Andrew Murdoch from Dovetail Legal Solutions with a May 2024 In-house Legal Job Market Update. I have three main takeaways.

The first takeaway is that the job market, after a subdued start, seems to have picked up and found a nice rhythm, with jobs continuously coming through. Just bear in mind, however, that typically, July is the quietest month in the recruitment year, and that it is much quieter than January or December.

The second takeaway is that the market seems to be performing equally across Australia.

Last year, we crunched some numbers to find out how many in-house lawyers were in each state, and we found there are fifty-two per cent of in-house lawyers in Sydney, twenty-six per cent of in-house lawyers in Melbourne, twelve per cent in Brisbane, and six per cent in Perth. And the number of jobs since the beginning of the year or the jobs advertised mirror those percentages almost identically so that for every one job there is in Perth, there are two in Brisbane, four in Melbourne, and eight in Sydney.

The third takeaway is that the interim market is outperforming the permanent market. I suspect that’s because businesses are looking for greater flexibility to scale up or scale down depending on which way the economy goes. If you have any further queries regarding any of this or comments, please feel free to give me a call at Dovetail Legal Solutions.
