SUMMARY
An exciting Senior Legal Counsel opportunity for an experienced privacy and data protection lawyer to join the Australian legal team of a leading global e-commerce organisation. This 12-month contract offers the chance to work on complex privacy, data governance and cross-border data matters across a portfolio of online businesses operating throughout the APAC region.
Based in Sydney with a hybrid working model, the role sits within an established in-house legal team and works closely with global privacy counsel across the US, Europe and Asia. The legal function supports works closely with global product, compliance and commercial teams to manage privacy, regulatory and legal risk across fast-growing digital businesses.
THE ROLE
As Senior Legal Counsel – Privacy & Data, you will provide strategic legal support on privacy, data protection and regulatory compliance across the organisation’s regional operations within APAC.
Working closely with the Sydney-based legal team and global privacy colleagues, you will contribute to the implementation and oversight of the organisation’s global privacy program
across APAC markets.
Key responsibilities include:
• Providing privacy and data protection legal advice to Australian operations
• Supporting privacy compliance, governance and legal risk management across the broader business throughout the APAC region
• Coordinating regional privacy legal matters across Asia, with support from external counsel
• Advising internal stakeholders on cross-border data transfers, data governance and privacy compliance frameworks
• Working with global legal and privacy teams across the US and Europe to ensure alignment with the organisation’s global privacy strategy
• Assisting with regulatory compliance, privacy guidance and data-related legal projects affecting business products and services across the APAC region
This role offers significant involvement with complex cross-border privacy and technology law matters within a large international digital business.
ABOUT YOU
You are an experienced privacy and data protection lawyer with a strong background advising on complex legal and regulatory issues within large commercial or technology-driven organisations.
You will bring
• Australian qualification with approximately 8+ years’ post-qualification experience in privacy, data protection, technology or regulatory law
• Strong experience advising on privacy compliance, data governance and regulatory frameworks
• Experience managing cross-border privacy issues and working with international stakeholders or external counsel
• Ability to provide clear, commercially focused legal advice to business and legal teams
• Experience working within multinational organisations or global legal teams across APAC, Europe or the US
• A proactive, pragmatic approach suited to a fast-paced in-house legal environment
