Legal Counsel – In-House Commercial & Disputes

SUMMARY
Excellent opportunity for an experienced In-House Legal Counsel to join a large national business in a broad in-house legal role based in Sydney. Working as part of an established and collaborative legal team, you will advise on commercial contracts, disputes, and day-to-day legal risk and compliance matters.

With a significant operational footprint and presence across multiple locations, the business partners closely with its customers to deliver essential services. The legal function collaborates closely with operational leaders, procurement teams and senior management to provide practical, commercially focused advice in a complex operational environment.

THE ROLE
This In-House Legal Counsel position combines dispute management with commercial contracting, supporting day-to-day operations across a national business. You will work closely with operational stakeholders to deliver practical legal advice, manage claims and litigation, and support contracting processes across customer and supplier arrangements.

Key responsibilities include:

• Managing disputes and claims, including commercial disputes, property and asset-related claims, and debt recovery
• Drafting, reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts, including customer agreements and supplier arrangements
• Advising operational teams, procurement and senior stakeholders on commercial legal risk and contractual matters
• Briefing and managing external counsel and insurers in relation to litigation and claims
• Supporting regulatory and compliance matters affecting operational activities
• Identifying recurring legal issues and helping improve contracting processes and internal risk management frameworks

ABOUT YOU
You are an Australian-qualified lawyer with strong experience across commercial legal work and dispute management. You are comfortable operating in a business-facing role and enjoy working closely with stakeholders to deliver practical, commercially sound legal advice.

You will have:
• Approximately 6+ years’ PQE
• Experience managing disputes or litigation
• Strong commercial contracting experience
• Prior in-house experience or strong interest in moving in-house
• Ability to communicate legal risk clearly to stakeholders
• Strong interpersonal skills and commercial judgement
