About.

We connect our clients with excellent lawyers – whether for ad hoc work, secondments, or permanent employees.

Offering premium services at economy rates.

Reducing legal costs – not by paying lawyers less, but by operating efficiently and reducing unnecessary overheads.

Our lawyers set their rates and we transparently disclose our margins, providing true market value.

Frequently Asked Questions.

Can Dovetail provide lawyers as secondees?

Yes, we sure do!

This is a large part of our Dovetail business.  We get it.  You need the right lawyer to join your team – whether for a couple of weeks or a couple of months – but you need the lawyer on a day rate basis, without adding to your own headcount.

Clients use secondees as additional resources to help with business-as-usual work within their team, to cover extended periods of leave or for specific business projects.

Can Dovetail help with lawyers for ad hoc legal work?

Yes, we do that too!

That’s right – if you need an external specialist for an ad hoc piece of legal work, we can connect you directly up with the right lawyer who has the necessary skills.

Some examples of work areas include employment law advice; intellectual property advice or trade mark / patent work; commercial litigation; corporate and M&A.

If there’s an area of work you need done, let us know and we can provide options for you.

Does Dovetail also do legal recruitment?

Yes, we do.  We can help you find your next lawyer whether you need them as a casual, fixed-term or permanent employee.

We understand that it can often be more cost effective for companies with longer term assignments to bring on an additional lawyer as a fixed-term employee or even a permanent employee.

Our transparent Dovetail model means we don’t mind whether you want to engage with the lawyer as a secondee on day rates or as an employee on your own payroll.  So just let us know if you have a preference either way.

How is Dovetail different?

We’re a legal broker, not a law firm.

We provide complete transparency and flexibility to clients and lawyers and we can access the entire market – so you know you’re getting true market rates and you can turn it on and off as you need.

Our transparent and flexible model is attractive to lawyers too as they can set their own rates.

It’s win-win-win.

What about if I’m interested in being a Dovetail lawyer?

That’s great – we’re always happy to have a confidential chat about what to expect and steps you can take to get yourself positioned for the right opportunities.

Just let us know and we’ll line up a time for an initial chat.

What’s the legal recruitment market like at the moment?

We get asked that a lot!  We’re happy to discuss specifics that may be more relevant to you and the sector that your business is in – just get in touch.

Also, we recently published an article in ACC’s Australian Corporate Lawyer magazine filled with practical tips when looking for your next role. If you’re interested in reading it, click here.

Meet the Team.

Andrew Murdoch As a lawyer, legal recruiter and in management in “new law”, Andrew Murdoch has seen first-hand the frustrations faced by in-house teams and individual lawyers. In-house teams need more resources but don’t have the budget and don’t want to sacrifice on quality. Meanwhile, skilled lawyers struggle to access quality work that also fits in with their life. Andrew co-founded Dovetail with the belief that these frustrations could be overcome for the mutual benefit of business and lawyers alike.

Andrew’s dislike of unnecessary internal meetings is equally matched by his love of using technology to avoid them and in his spare time he dreams of an age when his children will be old enough to join him again in backpacking overseas.
Charlie Smirl As a senior in-house lawyer who originally started in finance as a business analyst before moving across to corporate law 15 years ago, Charlie has always had a keen interest in how businesses are run. In his role as COO of Dovetail, Charlie brings a deep understanding of the commercial importance to businesses of having practical and timely legal support. Charlie has spent the last decade in senior in-house legal roles, each with its own array of stakeholders across multiple jurisdictions and its own challenges (not the least of which is that no one reads anything), and so he’s well aware that businesses want answers, not essays.

Charlie confesses to being addicted to chilli and, if he had his way, the Dovetail office would have a wood-fired oven installed for regular events involving freshly fired pizzas.
Andrew Bursill Andrew is a qualified Chartered Accountant and, for the past 18 years, Andrew has worked as a CFO, Company Secretary, and Director for numerous ASX listed, unlisted public and private companies. His particular experience in running and developing successful mid-cap companies has shown to him the importance of quality legal advice at a reasonable price – the key pillars to the success of Dovetail.

Notwithstanding his chosen career of accountancy, Andrew has defied the odds and has maintained a sense of humour, or at least he thinks so, quite often being the only one laughing at his jokes. His favourite: “An accountant is someone who solves a problem you didn’t know you had in a way you don’t understand”.
Sonia Cason With extensive commercial experience originally gained in finance before entering the legal sector in 2011, Sonia has always understood the importance of providing honest, clear and concise information to clients. Since having children, Sonia has been keenly aware of the importance of balance between home and career – and has been naturally drawn to Dovetail’s “practice what you preach” approach. Connecting lawyers and companies on their own terms, offering flexibility and total transparency, while putting clients at the centre of everything we do reflects Sonia’s own values and approach well.

When given the opportunity, you’ll find Sonia doing laps at south beach trying to perfect her technique and improve her times for her next ocean swim.
Imogen Spouse Imogen joined Dovetail in 2020 as an intern to support the business with administration and communication. Imogen is now in her final year at UTS studying to obtain her Bachelor’s Degree in International Business.

Imogen likes to understand the macro strategy of business decisions to provide the context for the daily tasks. She is keen to leverage her tertiary studies and learn on-the-ground about business management, workforce values and what delivering client services really means.

Although living in Sydney, Imogen is a Canberra native, a keen traveller and is looking forward to more international travel.
